There is no doubt that Tracy McGrady was one of the best shooting guards in the league in his prime, but unfortunately, injuries heavily affected his career. Even though he had a Hall of Fame career even with injuries, it is clear that McGrady is one of the biggest “what if” stories in the history of the league.

When speaking to Patrick Beverley recently, Tracy McGrady claimed that in his prime, he was on a similar level to shooting guard Kobe Bryant. Though this may come off as a hot take to some, there is definitely a reason for McGrady to believe this about himself.

“That was a conversation of who was the best players in the league,” McGrady said. “It was me and Kobe — of barbershop talk and around the league. Real hoopers, real basketball people know.”

During his time with the Orlando Magic, Tracy McGrady averaged 28.1 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 5.2 APG while shooting 36.1% from the 3PT range. Unfortunately, he never had a team that allowed him to make a deep playoff run, but on an individual level, McGrady was spectacular.

Kobe Bryant Once Embarrassed Tracy McGrady In A Set Of One-On-One Games

There is no doubt that most people would agree that Kobe Bryant was a better player than Tracy McGrady, whether it is in a team setting or a one-on-one setting. Once, Bryant revealed that he “cooked” McGrady in a set of one-on-one games and that they weren’t “even close”.

“I played T-Mac. I cooked him. Roasted him. Wasn’t even close. Ask him, and he’ll tell you. When I was about 20, we were in Germany doing some promotional stuff for that other sneaker company and we played basketball every day. We were in the gym all the time. We played three games of one-on-one to 11. I won all three games. One game I won 11-2. After the third game, he said he had back spasms and couldn’t play anymore.”

Even though he wasn’t necessarily as good as Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady was a spectacular player. It would have been interesting to see how his career would have gone if he had a good team around him, but unfortunately, we’ll never get a chance to see that.
