For the past 11 years, Damian Lillard has proudly led the Portland Trail Blazers. But after a culmination of circumstances led Dame to seek out a trade, it seems all the goodwill he’s built up with the franchise is starting to erode.
With all sides at a stalemate for now, it’s looking more and more like the Damian Lillard saga could turn ugly as the days and weeks pass by. All the while, young rookie prospect Scoot Henderson is trying his best to ignore all the noise and prepare for any scenario that he might find himself in this October.
“It’s definitely something out of my control. Professional sports is a business at the end of the day,” said Henderson. “I’m just going about it day by day, and just like y’all are hearing it from ear to ear, post to post. I haven’t really been on social media to really see what’s going on, but I’m here with the team at summer league, and my main focus is, especially when I’m out, to cheer my team.”
If Lillard does end up leaving before the season, it would essentially make Scoot the face of the franchise and it’s a responsibility that he says he’s ready for.
“If he leaves, I’m going to just embrace that. I’m going to embrace being the point guard for the team. And that comes with practice. I don’t have my spot guaranteed; I know that. My goal is to get better every day at practice and get better game by game.”
Is Scoot Henderson A Future All-Star?
While it’s impossible to predict the trajectory of a guy who hasn’t played in a game yet, the eye test will tell you that he’s got the makeup of a true franchise player. Besides having the powerful ability to get by any opponent with ease, his elite court vision also opens things up for his teammates.
Best of all is that Scoot is a true professional who not only embraces the expectations set upon him but strives to live up to them and become one of the best players in the game.
