Widely regarded as one of the best coaches in modern NBA history, Doc Rivers has a lot to be proud of when he looks back on his time in the NBA. Unfortunately for Rivers, however, the way things went down in Philly has jeopardized his NBA future, and now even Doc is unsure where his path leads next.
In a recent chat with TMZ, the former Sixers coach spoke up about his Philly exit and revealed that he’s still not certain what comes next for him.
“We spoke with Rivers — who was recently let go from his gig with the Philadelphia 76ers — outside Jon & Vinny’s in LA this week … and he made it clear his main focus is enjoying his recently-cleared schedule. ‘I don’t know what I’m gonna do,’ Rivers told us. ‘I’m just gonna enjoy life.’ I just enjoy life,” he told us … adding he was having a ‘phenomenal’ summer.”
After making millions over his tenure as a coach, Rivers is already set up for life, and he’s free to enjoy retirement and everything that comes with it. Regarding his future in the league, it probably won’t be long before he becomes the candidate in another coaching search down the line, but it could be some time before he takes the mantle as a head coach again.
What Went Wrong In Philadelphia?
Doc was thought to be a staple for the Sixers franchise, but Daryl Morey decided to go in another direction after he watched his team give up a 3-2 lead in the Conference Semi-Finals.
“It was challenging,” Rivers said on coaching James Harden. “More because we were fighting two things, and not like visually fighting. James was so good at playing one way, and the way I believe you have to play to win, in some ways is different because it’s a lot of giving up the ball, moving the ball, and coming back to the ball.”
Obviously, Rivers was not the right fit for that Sixers team, but he could thrive in another situation. With a 2008 title under his belt, he’ll always be validated with that title, and nobody can take that away.
