The LA Clippers could potentially have both Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul on their roster next season.
Per The Athletic’s Law Murray, “The Clippers would not be shutting the door on Westbrook even if they could acquire Paul, league sources not authorized to speak publicly told The Athletic,” Murray said.
“The biggest contract they can legally offer Westbrook (starting at 120 percent of the veteran’s minimum) would still be on the table. How Westbrook receives that is unclear.”
Murray further added: “While Westbrook was seriously contemplating returning to the Clippers on that contract for slightly more than the veteran’s minimum, those sources said, that was before LA’s interest in Paul reached this degree. Trading for Paul, while Westbrook is still available, would be a way for the front office to get the player it wants in place while forcing Westbrook to potentially take the same deal, but for undoubtedly a different role.”
It is widely expected that Paul will not stay with the Wizards and that the Clippers are interested in making a deal with the former to acquire him. It’s also worth noting that Westbrook becomes an unrestricted free agent in July.
Paul spent six seasons with the Clippers averaging 18.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists. His foray back into his former team will be an interesting one, and should the Clippers have Westbrook in the fold as well, they will surely be one competitive unit.
The LA Clippers Are Reportedly Frontrunners To Acquire Chris Paul
While the Los Angeles Lakers are one of the teams linked to Chris Paul, NBA insider Chris Haynes suggested that there were strong indications of a Paul-LA Clippers reunion.
“The Washington Wizards are likely to reroute Chris Paul in a trade and the Los Angeles Clippers are expected to pursue a reunion with the future Hall of Famer, league sources tell NBA on TNT and Bleacher Report.”
This season, Chris Paul averaged 13.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 8.9 APG for the Phoenix Suns. He has already proven that he can be a quality role player and with another veteran in Westbrook, the Clippers will have no shortage of experience and firepower.
Only time will tell if he indeed becomes a Laker or a Clipper.
