The 2023 NBA playoffs saw some incredible action on the court, but unfortunately, flopping ended up being one of the biggest talking points during it as well.
You had Steve Kerr calling out the Los Angeles Lakers for flopping while Jaylen Brown took a shot at Joel Embiid and James Harden for it. It certainly is an issue for the NBA and while discussing some rule changes for the league on the Ticket and The Truth podcast, Kevin Garnett hilariously suggested the league needs a flopping cage.
“I would call fouls for flopping,” Garnett said. “That’s when I would raise fouls… You should go in a f***ing cage for two minutes for flopping. We should have a flopping cage. Hey Adam (Silver) if you’re listening, let’s talk about the concept of a flopping two-minute box.”
(starts at 27:52 mark):
Of course, nothing of this sort is ever going to happen. There are plenty of times when flopping becomes a judgment call and you can imagine the controversy if a key player has to sit out for two minutes in the fourth quarter because of a debatable decision. As hilarious as it would be to see a player sitting by himself in the flopping box, it isn’t happening.
The NBA Is Looking To Implement A Penalty For Flops
The NBA was always going to look into this flopping issue as it is a terrible look for the league. Fans tend to be really put off by it and the NBA certainly does not want that. Shams Charania reported last month that they are looking to implement an in-game penalty for flops in the form of a technical foul free throw.
A trial run for that is possible at the Summer League next month and this would certainly be a step in the right direction. It should dissuade players from flopping to a certain extent, although it wouldn’t eradicate it from the game completely. Players have just gotten so used to doing it by now that it is second nature to some of them at this point.
