As a former 41st pick in the Draft, nobody was expecting Nikola Jokic to become an MVP-caliber player. Yet, eight years into his NBA career Jokic is in the conversation for the best player in the world after winning his first NBA championship. Now that the job is finished and Jokic has accomplished this milestone, fans are naturally looking ahead to predict what else the Joker might pull off before it’s all said and done.
Speaking on FanDuel TV, NBA insider Shams Charania spoke on the future of the newly crowned NBA champs and how Nikola Jokic is cementing his legacy as one of the modern basketball GOATs.
“This is a team that’s loaded right now. Look at his run for Nikola Jokic. We know historically what he did but then Jamal Murray, him coming back after missing the last two playoffs was bug… This 1st Championship, [the Nuggets are] gonna have a window here over the next 3-5 years… None of this is possible without Nikola Jokic. They know how much they lucked into it. He’s the modern-era Tim Duncan if there ever was one.”

As great as Jokic has been recently, it may be premature to start invoking the name of Tim Duncan. Over 19 years in the NBA, Duncan put together one of the greatest careers ever as a 15x All-Star, 2x MVP, and 5x champion. Obviously, the Joker still has a ways to go before his resume catches up.
But by the time Nikola Jokic’s career is over, it’s very possible he could have a claim for being the best big man ever.
Where Does Jokic Rank Among The Greatest Big Men Of All Time?
With a couple of MVPs to his name and a championship, there is no doubt that the Joker has elevated the all-time ranks. While it’s impossible to come to a consensus on where he ranks exactly, comparisons to Tim Duncan may not seem far off if he wins another championship or two during his career. At only 28 years old, he still has plenty of time to build up his resume.
The big thing for the Nuggets now is proving that this title was not just a one-time thing. If they can make some moves over the summer and make the team even better, nobody should be surprised if they are sitting in this exact situation again next year.
