Kevin Durant’s days in Phoenix appear numbered, and the rumor mill is heating up with a surprising frontrunner: the San Antonio Spurs. According to Suns insider John Gambadoro, someone close to Durant recently spoke with him and mentioned the Spurs as a serious landing spot.

While the exact identity of the source remains undisclosed, Gambadoro emphasized that this is someone Durant trusts, a detail that has ignited fresh speculation that the 36-year-old superstar sees San Antonio as his next NBA destination.

“So I do know somebody that has been with Kevin Durant recently, recently. And Kevin Durant and this person talked about the Spurs. And that’s why I mentioned the Spurs.”

“I don’t want to say who, but again, somebody that KD knows and trusts that was talking to KD, mentioned the Spurs.

It’s not just smoke either. The Spurs, despite closing another lottery-bound season, have been stealthily assembling a roster with win-now potential.

With Victor Wembanyama proving himself as a franchise cornerstone before being sidelined with a shoulder issue, and De’Aaron Fox arriving from the Kings to inject elite playmaking, San Antonio is missing just one piece: a proven veteran scorer with championship pedigree. Durant checks every box.

Rumblings around the league suggest that the Spurs are ready to form a “new big three” of Fox, Wembanyama, and Durant, a blend of youth, athleticism, and championship experience.

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists this season while shooting an elite 52.7% from the field and 43.0% from beyond the arc. Even as the Suns stumbled to an 11th-place finish in the West, Durant remained one of the league’s most efficient scorers.

Meanwhile, Phoenix seems ready to hit reset. After giving up a haul to acquire Durant, Bradley Beal, and form a superteam with Devin Booker, the Suns failed to make the playoffs and became the most expensive roster in NBA history. With Beal’s contract virtually untradeable, the front office’s only real flexibility lies in moving Durant.

According to reports, the Suns’ asking price for Durant has quietly dropped, making it easier for teams like San Antonio to engage in serious talks.

San Antonio’s offer is rumored to include the No. 14 pick in this year’s draft, plus two valuable role players Devin Vassell and Harrison Barnes with additional picks and a potential inclusion of Jeremy Sochan. This package gives the Suns depth, youth, and cap flexibility moving forward, especially with Barnes on an expiring deal.

While the Atlanta Hawks are also reportedly interested, their lack of trade assets could put them behind the Spurs. The Spurs, on the other hand, have everything a team like Phoenix would want in a rebuild: high draft capital, young rotation talent, and manageable contracts.

For Durant, San Antonio presents a fresh chapter with a franchise known for maximizing talent and stability. Pairing up with a generational big man like Wembanyama could extend his championship window and remove some of the load he’s had to carry in Phoenix. If this trade materializes, the Spurs would immediately vault into the contender tier in the Western Conference.

More importantly, the deal reflects a shifting NBA landscape, where younger teams like the Spurs are no longer content with development alone. They want to win, and adding Kevin Durant might be the final piece to do just that.
