Nikola Jokic is proving to the world that he really deserves the title of the best player in the world over the last few seasons and is cementing his status with a possible championship run in 2023.

Jokic has had a long road to get to the point he’s at right now, but his success isn’t based on an undying work ethic or will to succeed. Former teammate Isaiah Thomas revealed to ‘Through The Wire’ that he feels like Jokic doesn’t love the game but happens to be really good at it.

“Joker, he likes basketball, he doesn’t love it, he just happened to be good at it. Like, ‘Dang, I got to go for a 40-point triple-double tonight.’ He just seems like that. Not saying that he doesn’t love the game but I’ve never seen a superstar, an MVP, he just plays basketball on the side and happens to be really good at it. He’s really clocking in the work, getting his job done, and going home and doing whatever the hell he’s about to do.”

Every basketball player definitely loves the game to a major extent, otherwise, it’d be nearly impossible to put in the extra work to be a successful player, especially at the MVP level like Jokic.

His commitment to the game in his early years was questioned until he got into shape before the 2020-21 season and has since won two league MVPs and could win a championship this season.

The Game Loves Him Back

If basketball is just a job for Jokic, it really is a testament to his natural ability. To be the best at something without giving it all while everyone around you is devoting their entire lives to it has to be a gift. Even if he doesn’t love the game in IT’s eyes, he loves it enough to develop his craft into becoming the greatest big-man passer in the league’s history and possibly in the ranks as one of the greatest centers we have ever seen.

Winning a championship this season would cement Jokic’s status as one of the greatest ever. To think he achieved all of this without ‘loving’ basketball is insane, but nothing will ever beat hard work when it comes to success in a sport. Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady found that out together in Paris in 1998, and Jokic seems to have known that for himself for at least the last 4-5 seasons.
