As the last two teams standing in the NBA playoffs, you have to give credit to the Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets for the way they’ve played through the first three rounds. Interestingly, however, not everyone agrees that these teams are the best that the NBA has to offer.

Speaking with Kevin Garnett on his podcast, ‘KG Certified,’ Paul Pierce denied that the Heat and Nuggets are the best teams in basketball despite being the Finals matchup this year.

“I don’t think they’re the two best teams. Miami, I don’t consider them the best team. They playing the best. Think about it,” Pierce said. “We don’t have the two best teams. Miami was the worst scoring team in the league during the regular season. They showed bad habits all year long then all of a sudden they got to the playoffs and they just flipped the switch… they were a play-in team.”

The best team doesn’t always win in sports, and you could argue that just because the Heat have played better doesn’t mean they are objectively better than the opponents they beat. But when you consider that the Heat have been to three Conference Finals over the past four years, it suggests that this run is no fluke.

Is This Season The Greatest Underdog Run In NBA History?

No matter how you feel about the Heat and their roster, nobody can deny where they are now. Despite the ugly loss in Game 1, the Heat still have a puncher’s chance in the series and if they somehow win, it will be a story of the ages.

“If the Miami Heat are able to win this championship, it will be, in my opinion, the greatest run ever for an underdog,” said Charles Barkley.

So many factors play a role in deciding the NBA champion, and talent is just one of many. In Miami’s case, what they don’t lack in depth and talent of the bench, they are making up for in grit, heart, and experience.
