Star Zion Williamson is one of the brightest young talents in the league, and many consider him the face of the New Orleans Pelicans. However, injuries have plagued him during his young career, and he has consistently faced criticism due to his conditioning and weight.

Recently, NBA legend Charles Barkley has given Zion Williamson some stern advice. He noted that Zion Williamson absolutely has to get in shape, as if he doesn’t, he will keep getting injured.

“Zion Williamson, yo man, I don’t know man, we’ve never met. But somebody gotta tell you, ‘Yo man, you gotta get in shape.’ Cause you gonna keep getting hurt if you’re out of shape. I don’t think the coach has the power to tell you what to do. I don’t think David Griffin, who is a friend of mine, has the power to tell you what to do.”

“I’m so blessed for Moses Malone, who told me to get my fat ass in shape and made me lose 50 pounds. It changed the whole dynamic of my life. I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. I want you to be a great basketball player… I’ve seen dozens of guys eat their way out of the NBA. It can happen quickly because once you start getting hurt you’re gonna keep getting hurt… All you gotta do is get in shape.”

There’s no doubt that this is fair from Charles Barkley. Zion Williamson has averaged 28.5 games a season since his time in the NBA, and it is clear that something has to change if he is to become the superstar that his talent suggests that he can be.

This season, Zion Williamson averaged 26.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 4.6 APG for the New Orleans Pelicans. It is clear that he is a supreme talent that dominates when he is healthy, but the key is simply being able to stay on the court.

Kendrick Perkins Thinks The Pelicans Need To Trade Zion Williamson

There is no doubt that there are some alarming trends in Zion Williamson’s career thus far. It is not far-fetched to say that the Pelicans might consider trading him. In fact, Kendrick Perkins suggested that they should do just that.

“If we can see the weight he’s put on, you bet the organization sees it as well. When you’re dealing with a hamstring injury, it doesn’t take that damn long to come back. When you first get injured two things are gonna happen: they’re gonna tell you what’s the plan, your recovery, treatment, all that. The second thing they’re gonna talk to you about is nutrition, your diet. I’m pretty sure the organization has told Zion time and time again, to watch what you eat, and make sure you go on a diet so you can come back and recover… the word trust comes into play. If I’m the front office of the New Orleans Pelicans, do I trust this guy to be my franchise player. Do I trust him that I can give him the keys to my car to drive it? The answer is no… and his value is decreasing. So if I’m the Pelicans, I’m looking to trade Zion Williamson this offseason.”

It will be interesting to see what the New Orleans Pelicans do regarding Zion Williamson moving forward. It is clear that his durability has been an issue, but perhaps things will change in the future.
