After finishing with the 2nd-best record in the East this season, the Boston Celtics are feeling pretty good about their chances to make a deep playoff run this season. Even still, the uncertain future of one of their own has given many fans a reason to worry about the summer to come.

Jaylen Brown, who just came off the best season of his career, will be able to sign a supermax with the Celtics if he makes an All-NBA team. But as Brian Windhorst pointed out on the Bill Simmons podcast, Jaylen will likely be headed for free agency if he doesn’t qualify for the supermax.

“If Jaylen gets voted All-NBA he’s going to stay a Celtic. If Jaylen doesn’t get voted All-NBA he’s going to be a free agent…”

The Celtics have put Brown in a great situation. Alongside Jayson Tatum and a roster of shooters and playmakers, Jaylen has thrived as the number two guy making 25+ million a year. Season after season, the Cs have been among the best teams in the East, and that will likely continue as long as their current regime stays intact.

But with season averages of 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game on 49% shooting, Jaylen has massively outperformed his contract and he will no doubt be looking to sign for as much money as he possibly can — whether it’s with the Celtics or some other team.

Could Jaylen Brown Be Traded This Summer?

It’s a longshot scenario, no doubt, but there is a world where the Celtics move on from Jaylen if they can’t bear the idea of owing him and Jayson Tatum over $100 million combined.

If they do consider a deal, however, we already know one team that could be interested.

“I’ll say this, Jaylen Brown is a player that Damian Lillard has had on his list,” said NBA Insider Jake Fischer.

Brown is one of the best two-way wings in the league, so the market for him is going to be high. For now, though, Jaylen is focused on what’s in front of him and wants to get it done with the Celtics while there’s still a chance.

No matter what the future brings, there are no excuses for the Celtics this year, and anything but a Conference Finals appearance is going to be marked as a failure.
