Kobe Bryant is remembered for his exploits on the basketball court. He won 5 NBA championships, 2 Finals MVPs, and an MVP on his way to entering the GOAT conversation. Kobe inspired a generation with his mentality and ability, and he did some great things off the court too.
Although Kobe Bryant did not avoid controversy off the court during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, he also did some amazing things. One story of how he helped a young girl pay her college tuition after he told him she was a fan resurfaced recently.
“While he was signing them, he started asking her about school and life, and she started tearing up. She told him that she got accepted into the University of California Los Angeles, but she couldn’t afford to go because she has four younger brothers, and her family struggles to even get food on the table every night.
“Kobe consoled her, then told her that he had to leave, but he took her home phone number and said to be ready for a phone call that night. That night, Kobe called her home, and they talked for about an hour. In the end, she and her whole family were crying, as he promised to pay for her entire college tuition.
“Of course, a few days later, Kobe drove to UCLA and went to the admissions office to pay for her entire first year. They kept in touch over email and phone calls, and Kobe went to UCLA once a summer to pay for her next year. She graduated from UCLA in 4 years with both a major and a minor.”
This goes to show just how generous Kobe Bryant was, and the fact that this story is not very well known is another testament to his greatness. Youngsters looking up to Kobe for what he did on the basketball court is one thing, but he was clearly a lot more than that.
Kobe Bryant Was Always Looking To Help Others
There are likely a lot of stories about his charity work we will never hear, but even in basketball terms, Kobe Bryant was immensely helpful to others. He gave advice to LeBron James in his book, and youngsters like Kyle Kuzma have also revealed how he helped them.
Current Lakers Head Coach Darvin Ham once also spoke about how Kobe gave him confidence as a coach. It’s safe to say that he left an impact on people’s lives in more ways than one. Kobe Bryant may be gone, but the things he did in his life live on even today.
