After getting traded to the Dallas Mavericks earlier this season, most expected Kyrie Irving to re-sign with the team during free agency.

But considering the Mavericks have royally messed up this season, the hopes of Irving coming are getting dimmer. Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report recently mentioned that Kyrie is now expected to decide his future after becoming an unrestricted free agent.

“Despite the Dallas Mavericks’ struggles since acquiring Kyrie Irving, the plan is still to re-sign the star guard, league sources told Bleacher Report,” Haynes wrote. “Irving is eligible for an extension, but he will instead allow his future to be decided in free agency this summer, sources said. Dallas is 9-16 since making the blockbuster trade, but the shortcomings do not fall on Irving’s shoulders.”

The Dallas Mavericks are currently out of the play-in tournament, and Kyrie Irving is getting blamed for the team’s struggles. But as Haynes mentioned in his article, he shouldn’t shoulder the entire burden alone.

If anything, Luka Doncic’s recent lethargic body language is one of the biggest reasons behind the Mavs’ struggles.

Kyrie Irving Believes The Dallas Mavericks Cannot Become A Championship Team Overnight

The Dallas Mavericks gave up a lot of assets to complete the trade for Kyrie Irving. Evidently, the expectation was for the Mavs to contend for an NBA title instantly.

But Irving recently revealed that he’s always considered his move to the franchise a long-term project.

“I think their realistic view is that when I came here, that this was going to be a growing process. This was for the long term, and this is for something that’s bigger than ourselves, and we can’t just be a championship team overnight, especially me coming here. I’ve wrapped my head around that aspect of it. I’m at peace with it. It doesn’t mean I’m giving up on this season or any of my teammates, but we know where we realistically are. Our destiny is in other teams’ hands, losing games, so we just have to control what we can.”

With just three games left in the season, the Mavericks need to win every game of the season even to have a shot at clinching the last spot in the play-in tournament.

After all, having a 37-42 record in the loaded Western Conference is not enough for a team to be a championship contender.
