Kyrie Irving Thinks The Mavericks Can’t Become A Championship Team Overnight: “This Was For The Long Term…”

Kyrie Irving believes the Dallas Mavericks traded for him as a part of long-term plams.

Winning the NBA Championship is the ultimate goal of every team in the NBA, and to get one step closer to that goal, the Dallas Mavericks traded for Kyrie Irving earlier in the 2022-23 NBA season.

Most expected the Mavericks to become an instant contender for the NBA title. After all, having the dynamic duo of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic alongside decent role players should be enough to achieve that goal. However, following an underwhelming season so far, Kyrie has now realized that his trade to the Mavs was part of the long-term goal.

“I think their realistic view is that when I came here, that this was going to be a growing process. This was for the long term, and this is for something that’s bigger than ourselves, and we can’t just be a championship team overnight, especially me coming here. I’ve wrapped my head around that aspect of it. I’m at peace with it. It doesn’t mean I’m giving up on this season or any of my teammates, but we know where we realistically are. Our destiny is in other teams hands losing games so we just have to control what we can.”

Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic’s Mavericks are currently the 11th seed in the Western Conference with a 37-40 record. Fans obviously wanted the Mavericks to compete for the NBA Championship this season, but the hopes of that happening are slimming down with each passing game of the season.

Can The Dallas Mavericks Still Clinch A Spot In The Playoffs?

The Mavericks are 6-14 over their last 20 games. These are not signs of a team that is a championship contender in the NBA. If anything, the Mavericks aren’t even looking like a play-in tournament team at the moment.

With that being said, it doesn’t mean all hope is lost for the Mavs to qualify for the postseason. They can still clinch a play-in spot with five games left to be played this season.

The only issue is the fact that apart from winning each of their next five games, the Mavericks will also need to rely on teams like the New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Los Angeles Lakers to lose a few games as well.

Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that Kyrie gave an NSFW answer to the Mavericks’ hopes for the season. If Irving re-signs with the team next season, they may have a better shot at winning it all. But as of now, there is no surety about Irving’s return to the team, as he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
