Every season it seems like you can always point to teams making stupid decisions and this one is no different.
Bill Simmons on his podcast, hilariously brought up the “Mount Dumbdore” for this season, a wordplay on Mount Rushmore, to give his list of the four dumbest teams for the 2022-23 campaign.
“I think my Mount Rushmore for dumbest teams 2023 would be Washington, Minnesota, Atlanta, and Dallas, (they) are my top four this season,” Simmons said. “Washington, Minnesota, Atlanta, (and) Dallas is my Mount Dumbmore for 2023. I just don’t agree philosophically with their strategies as franchises.”
(starts at 1:31:04 mark):
For the Dallas Mavericks, Simmons is going back to their decision to let Jalen Brunson leave, which is one of the biggest mistakes any team has made in recent years. The problem with trading for Kyrie Irving was also brought up earlier and it really doesn’t have anything to do with him. The Mavs gave away their best defender in Dorian Finney-Smith and their second-best scorer in Spencer Dinwiddie to get him. The trade has made their defense a lot worse and getting Kyrie didn’t address their big issue of not having a good big man. The Mavs rank at the bottom of the league with just 38.6 RPG and no other team is under 40 RPG, as per the NBA.
For the Timberwolves it’s about the Rudy Gobert trade which everyone has criticized by this point. On the Atlanta Hawks, Simmons did not like the fact that they traded away Kevin Huerter basically for a first-round pick. He also wasn’t a fan of trading away that big haul of draft picks for Dejounte Murray, when it wasn’t certain that the move would work out.
Simmons had the Wizards as the dumbest team earlier in the podcast. They continue to remain mediocre and didn’t trade away Kyle Kuzma, something he did not like. Simmons doesn’t see the point in re-signing Kuzma and having another season where they win between 33 to 43 games. He also called them out for constantly missing on draft picks and felt re-signing Bradley Beal to a big contract was a mistake as well.
Tim MacMahon Says The Dallas Mavericks Are The Most Disappointing Team In The NBA
The 2021-22 season was an incredible one for the Mavericks. They stunned the top-seeded Phoenix Suns in the playoffs and only ended up losing in the Conference Finals to the eventual champions, the Golden State Warriors. Instead of building on that success, they have gone south.
Letting Brunson go was the first big mistake and then, despite Luka Doncic playing at an extremely high level, they remained mediocre. That led to Luka and head coach Jason Kidd pushing for them to trade for Irving and they have just gotten worse after that move. ESPN’s Tim McMahon, who covers the Mavs, says they are the most disappointing team in the NBA and it is hard to argue against that at the moment. They are the 11th seed with a 37-39 record and won’t even be in the play-in tournament if the regular season ended today.
