LeBron James’ arrival at the Los Angeles Lakers was celebrated like a festival in the City of Angels in 2018. There were a plethora of billboards and murals around the city to welcome the King.

The media was also on the lookout to catch the reactions of major figures in the league to LeBron James joining the Purple and Gold. Among them, legendary head coach Gregg Popovich arguably had one of the greatest reactions to the news. Popovich claimed he was scared to death after seeing one of LeBron’s giant billboards outside a hotel.

“It was horrifying to see LeBron’s face outside my hotel room,” Popovich said. “It was a big picture of him. Last night and all day today I gotta look at this guy putting his headphones on. He’s already big, and now he’s monstrous. I was scared to death. I was scared to look out my room.”

Gregg Popovich may look like one of the most serious people in the NBA, but when it matters, the San Antonio Spurs head coach is capable of making some jokes.

Considering the recent drama around ‘Players not being scared of LeBron James’ remarks by Mario Chalmers, fans should expect such clips to resurface on the internet. After all, Popovich did accept being scared of LeBron one way or the other.

Gregg Popovich Has Always Been An Admirer Of LeBron James’ Game

For more than the last two decades, Gregg Popovich has been one of the top coaches in the league. It’s no surprise that he has the most regular season wins to his name as well.

So, whatever coach Popovich says about any player in the league is held in the highest regard. With that being said, Pop once revealed why he admired James from his first day in the NBA.

“It’s kind of like when I first came to the league back in the 80s as an assistant coach. I get mesmerized watching Michael on the court, and you know, I wasn’t much help to Larry Brown. I’m watching Michael and I do that with LeBron. He’ll do things. He’ll look over once in a while and smirk. I’ve appreciated LeBron from Day 1 … He never let (early criticism) to get to him … it’s the mental toughness. It really impressed me at that young age for him to have that maturity.”

James has indeed shown a level of maturity that not many players have displayed throughout their NBA careers. And the fact that James entered the league straight from high school makes it even more impressive.
