NBA Insider Says Four Fights Broke Out During Cavs’ Championship Run With LeBron And Kyrie

The Cavaliers’ 2016 championship run was fueled by internal fights, forging a resilient, championship team.

The Cleveland Cavaliers‘ 2016 championship run remains one of the most iconic stories in NBA history. It was a tale of redemption, resilience, and one of the greatest comebacks the sport has ever seen, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the 73-win Golden State Warriors.

But according to NBA insider and former Cavs sideline reporter Allie Clifton, what fans witnessed on the court only scratched the surface of what truly defined that championship journey.

On a recent episode of the Road Trippin’ podcast, Clifton revealed a gritty truth behind the scenes: four physical altercations broke out during that legendary title run. Not just heated exchanges or locker room tension or real fights.

“Four. That’s fights. That’s swinging. That’s grown men being restrained, which, that’s a lot,” Clifton said. “Have I seen a lot of bickering and arguing? Yeah, that’s different.”

The revelation adds a new layer of understanding to the competitive fire that fueled that Cavaliers team. LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love, and a roster of seasoned veterans like J.R. Smith, Richard Jefferson, and Channing Frye were all under immense pressure that season.

Coming off a brutal Finals loss in 2015 and facing the overwhelming narrative of the Warriors’ historic 73-9 season, the Cavaliers’ margin for error was nonexistent.

Clifton’s comments highlight the emotional toll and competitive intensity that simmered throughout the year. These weren’t minor disagreements, these were full-blown altercations between teammates, high-stakes clashes born from the pursuit of excellence. And yet, rather than destroying team chemistry, these fights may have actually fortified the group.

Conflict, when managed and resolved, can often be a sign of a team’s deeper bond and shared goal. The Cavaliers were a collection of strong personalities: LeBron’s exacting standards, Kyrie’s desire for individual greatness, Love’s search for role definition, and a supporting cast of tough-minded role players with their own pride and competitiveness.

That type of mix was bound to spark friction, but the fact that they overcame it speaks volumes about their internal culture.

It’s also telling that Clifton, who traveled with the team and had rare access behind the curtain, emphasized the physicality and frequency of those moments. In an NBA era where drama is often whispered about and speculated through social media leaks, she openly confirmed that four separate fights occurred and yet the team never unraveled.

In fact, that 2016 Cavaliers team is often remembered for its unwavering belief, especially after going down 3-1 in the Finals.

LeBron’s iconic block on Andre Iguodala, Kyrie’s game-winning three over Stephen Curry, and Kevin Love’s clutch stop on Curry in the final minute are legendary moments now, but they were made possible by a team that learned how to survive internal adversity long before the Warriors ever took a 3-1 lead.

So while the outside world saw the champagne, the confetti, and the parade, inside that locker room was something far more raw: tension, accountability, and sometimes even fists. And it’s perhaps that fire, that refusal to crumble under the weight of expectations or personal conflict, that made them champions.
