Dillon Brooks had his take on losing $248,242 through fines in the ongoing season. The Memphis Grizzlies star has been a regular fixture when it comes to making headlines for the wrong reasons, and he was at it again when playing the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.
He picked up his 18th technical when he took on Kyrie Irving, and that was enough for the NBA to deem slapping a tech. When asked about losing money through fines and suspensions, he had a crisp response. Per The Commercial Appeal: “It’s just paper. The media gave me the villain role, so I’m just taking it and doing what I need to do with it.”
It appears that Brooks will likely serve another one-game suspension. Memphis plays the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, and the guard might be on the sidelines for the contest. According to the rules, a player will incur a $5,000 penalty for every technical foul after their 16th and is suspended for a game on every second tech.
And given Brooks’ fiery and in-your-face attitude that’s earned him brickbats from teams and fans across the league, chances are his time paying fines aren’t going to be done anytime soon.
Dillon Brooks Has Stirred Up Quite The Smoke This Season
Be it his brouhaha with Donovan Mitchell, or trading shots at Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors, Brooks has managed to get himself a “bad boy” tag this season.
Ahead of the skirmish against the Mavericks that ended with Irving not accepting Brooks’ jersey, the latter found himself losing $35,000 for shoving a cameraman when the Grizzlies played the Miami Heat.
Safe to say, Brooks’ attitude does call into question where the limit actually is. He’s not making any friends in the NBA and his numbers —14.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists can definitely be a lot better if he perhaps focused on the game more than getting into altercations.
And the team believes in his potential. Earlier, head coach Taylor Jenkins backed him to be an All-Defensive player after the Grizzlies’ win against the Warriors.
“You watch the film, the stats about what opponents average against him, field goal percentages, point totals… I mean this guy absolutely cares about defense, wants to set a tone for us, (and) be a leader in that department for us. The numbers don’t lie, the film doesn’t lie. So, I think it’s a no-brainer that he should be an All-Defensive player.
Clearly, there’s enough in Brooks to scale greater heights. Maybe he can tone it down and be the best on the floor rather than blow himself up.
