It looks like 2022-23 could finally be the season when Joel Embiid gets his hands on that MVP award.
His head coach Doc Rivers was asked about it prior to their game against the Chicago Bulls on Monday and he made his feelings clear on the matter.
“I’m going to say this one more time, I’m going to try to stay off this subject,” Rivers said. “Joel is the MVP. I thought he was the MVP last year. I don’t think anyone needs me to campaign for him, I think the proof is in the pudding.”

Rivers made it clear he feels no need to campaign for Embiid to win the award. He believes the voters just need to look at the film and the numbers and it would be obvious he deserves to win MVP.
Embiid is having a monstrous season, as he leads the league with 33.6 PPG while also averaging 10.3 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.1 SPG, and 1.8 BPG. He has led the Sixers to the third-best record in the NBA at 48-23 and they still have a shot at finishing with the best record. He has finished runner-up to Nikola Jokic in each of the last two seasons and Rivers believes Embiid should have won it last year. There are many who would agree and if he does lose out to Jokic again this year, some of the talking heads in sports television might erupt with fury.
Joel Embiid Isn’t Concerned With Winning MVP
After losing out to Jokic last year, Embiid said he didn’t care about the MVP race anymore and his stance doesn’t seem to have changed since then. He stated earlier this month that he doesn’t care about MVP or DPOY, adding that he is still going to be the best player on the court, even if he doesn’t win those awards.
He says he is just focusing on the right things and the results have been terrific. Whether he wins the award or not, Embiid can be proud of how well he has played this season and ultimately, if he does go on to win that elusive title this year, then he probably wouldn’t care all that much about losing out on MVP.
