Kevin Love’s near-decade-long stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers is finally coming to and, with Shams Charania reporting that the player has agreed to a contract buyout with the franchise.
Kevin Love was one of the finalists in the Sixth Man of the Year race last season and has gradually lost his place in the Cavaliers’ rotation behind frontcourt players like Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. He also doesn’t match the age timeline the franchise is on, so it was natural that the former champion will be headed somewhere new eventually.
The Athletic has reported that the Miami Heat are front-runners to sign Love, with a possible starter spot available for the veteran due to their lack of frontcourt depth. He was expected to be one of the names on the buyout market since the trade deadline.

Love joined the Cavaliers in 2014 when the team traded Andrew Wiggins to the Timberwolves to pair him alongside LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. He went to 4 Finals, won one title, and stayed with the franchise through their rebuild. Considering his role in the only title in Cavs’ history, Love could be referred to as a team legend.
Will The Miami Heat Reignite Kevin Love’s Spark?
Outside this season, Love hasn’t been on a team looking to contend since the 2018 Finals run with the Cavaliers. He fell out of the rotation in Cleveland this season and now gets to possibly be the starting four on the Heat in a frontcourt duo with Bam Adebayo.
Love’s stretchability will give the Heat a perimeter weapon they desperately need. The team will hope Adebayo’s incredible defensive play will be good enough to cover any lapses by K-Love on that front. He should have been a valuable veteran on contending teams for years but his large contract made it hard to accommodate.
He can play up his value with the Heat and then possibly find another long contract before he starts to wind his career down.
