After almost two full seasons of misery on the Lakers, Russell Westbrook is finally free to write the next chapter of his NBA career. Since leaving the OKC Thunder in 2019, Russ has had trouble finding a new basketball home.
In four seasons, Westbrook is now on his fourth team after the trade to Utah was made in the closing minutes of the NBA’s trade deadline. With his future up in the air now, Russ could become a free agent if he agrees to a buyout with Utah.
As Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Wednesday evening, Russ is currently in ongoing conversations with several teams, including the Bulls, Wizards, Clippers, and Heat, about what his role would look like.
“I’m told that Russell Westbrook has permission from the Jazz to go out and explore with potential buyout teams a role elsewhere that might fit. Among the teams they have communicated with: the Bulls, the Clippers, the Wizards, the Miami Heat,” said Woj. “I think a lot of this is getting a sense about what a potential fit might look like, what a role might look like. So with Westbrook, you look at some of those teams, a little bit of history there.”
At 34 years old, Westbrook is close to the end of his career but could still bring value and help a team win under the right conditions.

In 52 games with the Lakers this season, Westbrook averaged 15.9 points, 7.5 assists, and 6.2 rebounds per game on 41% shooting.
Where Will Russell Westbrook Play Next After Lakers Exit?
As Woj reported, there are four teams in pursuit of Westbrook, but it’s the Clippers and Bulls who are reported to be most interested in him. In those places, he could really help with his skills as a ballhandler and playmaker.
With the Wizards, he could play the role of a hero after reuniting with Bradley Beal and helping them return to the NBA playoffs.
Needless to say, Russ has a unique opportunity here to write out his own story, and anybody can tell he’s not taking it lightly.
What happens next will be interesting to watch because it may be the final stop for Russell Westbrook’s historic career.
