Kyrie Irving Cold-Bloodedly Promised To Stay With Cavaliers, Celtics And Nets Before Suddenly Leaving Each Team

Kyrie Irving made promises to stay at each franchise he was a part of before ensuring a move away from the team.

Kyrie Irving has not quite managed to stay out of the news cycle at any point in the last few seasons. Whether it’s over a social issue, a political one, or just injuries, he’s missed quite a few games and caused a lot of controversy. And just when the Brooklyn Nets thought they might be getting a season without any of it, Irving dropped a bomb on them by requesting a trade before the February deadline.

In 2016, Kyrie Irving was an NBA champion. Having been a key member of one of the greatest runs of all time alongside LeBron James, he won a championship for the organization that drafted him. The Cavaliers had been burned by their stars leaving in the past, and so there was great optimism that Kyrie Irving had committed to staying with the franchise long before they even won a championship.

“Are you going to leave us like LeBron left us?” one kid asked.

“It’s a great question,” Kyrie replied. “No, I won’t leave. I won’t leave. How can I leave you guys?”

This was followed by an expeditious exit, with Kyrie Irving joining the young Boston Celtics in an effort to lead his own team to success. Being in LeBron James’ shadow can be tough for anyone, and despite the Celtics not achieving the ultimate goal in his first few seasons, Irving explained that he wasn’t in any hurry to move on.

“I’ve shared it with some of my teammates as well as the organization as well as everyone else in Boston. If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here next year,” he said in 2018.

Of course, Irving famously did not re-sign and ended up going to the Brooklyn Nets to team up with Kevin Durant. And things have only gotten worse there.

Kyrie Irving’s Agent Suggested He Wants To Make Brooklyn His Home Days Before Trade Request

Kyrie Irving’s time in Brooklyn has been nothing short of dramatic, so this isn’t very unexpected. But only a little while before he requested a trade, Irving’s agent claimed that the star desired to stay in Brooklyn moving forward.

“I have reached out to the Nets regarding this. We have had no significant conversations to date. The desire is to make Brooklyn home, with the right type of extension, which means the ball is in the Nets’ court to communicate now if their desire is the same.”

There is no reason to suggest that Kyrie Irving cannot change his mind about his plans, but the amount of broken promises at this point are a bit of a red flag. Teams will always covet Kyrie because of his incredible talent on the court, but as he has shown in the past, one can never know exactly what they’re getting with him.
