The Denver Nuggets are trying to place a flag on top of the Western Conference in a year that has been extremely tight in terms of records of the top Western teams. The Boston Celtics, on the other hand, have had the best record in the NBA for almost the entire season. Their clash as the leaders in each Conference was the perfect way to start the new year.

The Nuggets pulled off a great 111-123 win, with their ever-reliable offense helping them outscore the Celtics on a night they were clicking. This was a great win and saw Nikola Jokic put up a 30-point triple-double with 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Fans hailed Nikola as the leader in the MVP race given how he outplayed Jayson Tatum.

Scal "It's just not fair."#MVP Nikola Jokic doing MVP things in the 1st quarter:

-great entry pass to Aaron Gordon for the dunk
-posts up Al Horford, bangs in for the lay-in
-pulls up and rainbows in the 3-pointer
-drives in, lays it up off glass#MileHighBasketball #Nuggets pic.twitter.com/g3p192trIH

Blown away watching Jokic and the Nuggets. If this team can string together a robust healthy stretch they can still flirt with 60 wins. Going to be extremely difficult to deny Jokic a 3rd MVP in that caseβ€”an impossible puzzle for defenses to solve all game long. Truly brilliant.

We’re nearly halfway through the NBA season now and there is no justifiable reason that Nikola Jokic can’t win MVP again this year. For the 3rd time in a row. All-time player behaviour.

That’s cool.

Tatum had an average night with 25 points on below-average efficiency, so the Celtics needed more from him to close this out. Jokic was dominant and has unlocked new levels of offensive mastery this season, putting his skill set on full display tonight.

The Greatest MVP Race In Modern History?

The voting for the 2022-23 NBA MVP will be among the most divisive results we have seen in the last 20 years. feasibly, there are at least 7 players in the mix right now with strong cases. Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Zion Williamson making strong cases for their candidacy.

Doncic and Durant have been rising rapidly recently after leading their teams on incredible win streaks to end up with strong records in their conferences. Embiid has been a cornerstone for the 76ers and anchoring a top defense while rivaling Luka in the scoring leader race.

Giannis has dipped recently after the Bucks’ struggles, but he’s still putting up monster stats, while Zion Williamson has entered the race late, after an incredible December that’s seen him rival Jokic’s Nuggets for the top spot in the West.
