Adam Silver has high hopes for the NBA in terms of inclusion and making the game a place for everybody. The association has always defended the right of those who didn’t have a voice before and pushed to make them known to the world.
When it comes to women, the league has made some good decisions in the past, although certain things have been overlooked by authorities on certain teams. The NBA wants to bring people together and give opportunities to everybody, especially women.
We have seen female referees in the league doing a good job, as well as assistant coaches that have done a terrific job for their franchises. Becky Hammon is the perfect example of that, as she thrived on the San Antonio Spurs, becoming the first woman to fill in as head coach when Gregg Popovich was unavailable. She also was a candidate to take over the Portland Trail Blazers before they signed Chauncey Billups.
Adam Silver Wants To See The First Woman Head Coach In The NBA Soon
Talking with Bonnie Bernstein in an NCAA podcast, NBA commissioner Adam Silver is hopeful that more women will get consideration for these jobs, as he thinks when it comes to intellect and tactics, there shouldn’t be any difference between men and women in the NBA.
“In jobs that aren’t about how high you can jump, how strong you are, or how tall you are, things should be completely equal,” Silver said, via CBS Sports. “I think you are going to see that over time in the coaching ranks.”
Silver admits that the NBA should do a better job adding women as head coaches, saying that there should be more feminine presence in the league.
“This generation coming in grew up differently, and has a different sensibility about roles men and women can play in the workforce. I’ve said this before, as much as professional sports has led and the WNBA and NBA have led in certain areas, we’re a bit behind in this area,” Silver said. “We should have more women head coaches. We should have a female head coach right now. We should have more women referees, and it’s something we’re working very hard on right now.”
He even admitted that it would be very bad if the league doesn’t have a female head coach in the next five years, giving some sort of a timetable about how things should go from here.
“I would be hugely disappointed if certainly in five years we haven’t seen our first female head coach in the NBA,” Silver said.
This would be really historical for the NBA and whichever team decides to sign a woman as their head coach. Hammon appears to have the best chances to do so, especially after winning the WNBA championship in her first year as the Las Vegas Aces’ head coach.
