NBA Fans aren’t too pleased with Ja Morant placed above Stephen Curry in the updated MVP rankings.
The latest list sees Jayson Tatum right on top, followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Ja Morant, and Kevin Durant. Curry was placed ninth, and this had fans going on a rant.
Morant climbed up one rung higher from the last week. He was instrumental in guiding his side to a 142-101 blowout win against the Milwaukee Bucks while also notching up his third triple-double over the last seven contests he suited up for.
He averages 27.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.9 assists this season and will see another jump should he continue in the same vein. On the other hand, Curry, before sustaining a left shoulder injury that now rules him out for a few games for the Warriors, was in ninth place after not being ranked the week before.
He averages 30.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 6.8 assists this season and vaulted over Los Angeles Lakers big man Anthony Davis who is now tenth on the list. But the fans weren’t happy with Morant making the top five.
NBA Fans Unhappy With Ja Morant Making The Top Five Over Stephen Curry
While their numbers suggest a close contest, the fans felt the sharpshooter deserved a higher place. However, the rankings also look at how the results have impacted the player’s respective teams, and that’s where Curry’s ninth-place finish gets an explanation.
Despite his brilliance, the inconsistent Warriors are placed 10th in the West with a 14-15 record. According to the NBA’s scribes, there are certain factors that go into picking MVP, and according to Fran Blinebury:
“Consistent individual excellence combined with team leadership and more than a few moments of transcendent brilliance. It’s not merely about scoring the most points or checking off stat boxes, but also being able to affect a game, a season, a franchise in many different ways.”
Moving on to some of the reactions:
Ja morant above steph curry, kd, embiid and luka is comical.
The entire thing is bait for engagement. The MVP picture isn’t really clear until probably the All Star break honestly.
I do agree that Embiid should be in the 3-4 spot. I feel like Embiid vs Giannis is the easier argument, so far.
Lillard will be on there in two weeks. Book it
Jokic for the back to back to back MVP!
Luka could definitely be in line for a “Massive carry job on mediocre playoff team” MVP. But gotta be a clear playoff team first.
Why does NBA love Ja so much?
I think Embiid, Curry, Doncic, and Davis are still more valuable players than Tatum or Morant
My top 5: Luka-Steph-KD-Giannis-AD
How could AD be this low? Last 30 days he avg 32pts, 14 rebs, 3 ast, 1.5 stl, 2.5 blk on 65% fg 85% FT. He absolutely on fire.
While the rankings leave the floor open for debate, there is no doubt that the two players are still lethal and terrific. The Warriors will be dented with Curry’s absence, but for the Grizzlies, it’s onwards and upwards.
