The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a disappointing and close loss against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night. The Lakers have been slowly turning their season around, with Anthony Davis and LeBron James finding some form. The issues with the roster have not been resolved yet, but some players are stepping up and making enough good plays to contribute to winning.

The Lakers lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in a game that went into overtime. They had the chance to win the game but missed clutch free throws, one from Austin Reaves and one from Anthony Davis. If they had made those shots, they would have walked away with an impressive win, but it became another setback. And while fans of the team are understandably disappointed in how things turned out, there’s someone else who is experiencing the frustration as well.

Austin Reaves Revealed That His Mother Will Be Frustrated With Him For Missing Free Throws

Free throws are often an overlooked aspect of the game, the ability to make them at a high rate is very valuable. The Dallas Mavericks lost against the Milwaukee Bucks thanks to their inability to make some, and it also haunted the Lakers. And speaking to the media after the game, Austin Reaves revealed some of the more unexpected consequences of those misses.

“You always have to make that [free throw], especially under those circumstances…. But it sucks to miss. I’m sure my mom will be frustrated at me for missing a free throw.”

NBA players work on their free throws since they are children. Anything under an 80% success rate is considered to be a weakness at the NBA level. And it’s even more important for role players to be good at them, often because clutch situations come down to which of them can make the free throws when it counts.

Austin Reaves’ mom, Nicole Wilkett, was an accomplished basketball player at the collegiate level. She averaged 21.3 points per game during her senior season at Arkansas State. Reaves comes from a basketball family and has likely been coached by his parents from a young age, making the frustration he is talking about coming from his mother seem very understandable. It’s back to the drawing board for the Lakers once again. The team is 5 games under .500 after their latest loss.
