Paul Pierce Says Lakers Aren’t Legit Contenders Because LeBron James Is Old: “He Averaged 30, But How Much Longer Can He Do That?”

Paul Pierce is once again doubting LeBron James, claiming that his age will become a problem for the Lakers next season.

Even though he’s been away from the NBA for a while now, Paul Pierce always finds a way to keep his name relevant, mostly thanks to his bold takes. The Boston Celtics legend was more under the spotlight during his time with ESPN, but we all know that came to an abrupt end.

Now, Pierce is making some appearances here and there, and he’s become a consistent commentator on Kevin Garnett’s “KG Certified” show. The two 2008 NBA champions have shared a long-standing relationship, and whenever they get together, you know you’ll be entertained.

During the 25th episode of Garnett’s show, Pierce made another appearance, this time talking about the state of the NBA, the rules changes, and more. At some point, they discussed the Los Angeles Lakers’ chances to win it all this season, with Pierce dismissing the Purple and Gold as championship contenders.

Paul Pierce Dismisses Los Angeles Lakers As Legit Contenders

The Truth has always been considered a LeBron James hater, and after this take, that won’t change. Pierce claims that James’ age is a big factor in why the Lakers won’t be legit contenders this year. He agreed that he’s coming off a big season individually speaking, but having a huge responsibility at age 37 will be too much for him (16:00 mark).

“I’m not seeing the Lakers as a legit contender,” Pierce said. “For one, LeBron is a year older. Yeah, he averaged 30, but how much longer can he do that? And now you’re gonna put that pressure on him at the age of 37, 38 to go out there and help carry A.D. (Anthony Davis). He can’t stay healthy. But then who the other moving pieces? Who your role players?”

The Los Angeles Lakers current roster is apparently constructed to help both LeBron James and Anthony Davis. They brought in new veterans, will welcome players that didn’t play last year like Kendrick Nunn, and also added two interesting guards via trade and free agency in Patrick Beverley and Dennis Schroder, respectively.

The Lakers appear to be very excited about this squad, despite missing some big opportunities to improve their level even more. Some don’t think their offseason moves are enough to make them legit title contenders, and Pierce is one of those. We’ll have to sit and wait for how things develop for the Lakers and if LeBron can prove his doubters wrong again.
