Duncan Robinson told Moe Wagner that he shouldn't feel pressured into drinking beer on his first day at Michigan, to which the German had a hilarious response.

That first day at college can be somewhat nerve-racking, as one enters new surroundings while being unsure of what to expect. It would be the case more so for a foreigner like Moe Wagner, who came over from Germany in 2015 to play college basketball at the University of Michigan.

Wagner had played professionally for Alba Berlin before making the move to the U.S., and he had some success at the collegiate level, as he made Second-team All-Big Ten and was also the Big Ten Tournament MVP in 2018. While he had all this success with Michigan in his final season, Wagner was very much a bit-part player in 2015-16. Someone on that team who did get to play a whole lot at that time was Duncan Robinson, and it would appear that the two of them met on the opening day of college.

As one can imagine on the opening day of college, the students must have been having a blast, and Robinson told the German when they met that he didn’t have to drink beer if he didn’t want to. Little did Robinson know that Germans and beer go hand in hand.

The Germans do love themselves some beer, and with the legal drinking age in the country being 16, Wagner would have had plenty of experience with drinking by the time he showed up at Michigan. It was still a nice gesture on the part of Robinson, who might have felt that Wagner was a bit tensed.

Despite the contrasting starts to their respective careers in college, Wagner would emerge as the better prospect of the two as they made their way to the NBA. He was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, while Robinson was undrafted but got picked by the Miami Heat and has since proven to be a solid role player.

Wagner would amount to the same as well in the NBA, but his younger brother Franz, who was selected with the 8th pick of the 2021 draft, has shown a lot of promise. He had a fine rookie season that earned him a spot on the All-Rookie First Team, and he has impressed at EuroBasket as well. Prior to that 2021 draft, he had flamed his older brother by stating that if Moe can play in the league – obviously they’ll take anyone. That was a hilarious shot right there, and the two are also teammates right now for the Orlando Magic, which must be a special experience for them.
