As we approach the free agency period in the NBA offseason, teams will be finalizing their strategies on how they plan to tackle this extremely crucial phase of the year. Free agency can make or break teams in a flash, and while the Golden State Warriors aren’t quite in that position, they still have their priorities sorted out for the summer.

They have made Kevon Looney their number one priority in free agency, with Gary Payton II also being someone they want back despite serious interest from elsewhere. They would also ideally want to bring back the whole gang, and as per GM Bob Myers, it means that talks of extensions for those already under contracts like Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole are very much on the back burner for now.

“Don’t expect immediate news on any Poole or Andrew Wiggins extensions. Rookies extensions like Poole’s often don’t get revved up until near the deadline in October and the Warriors have plenty of time later in the summer to negotiate with Wiggins.”

“Those guys are not unrestricted free agents,” Myers said. “So we don’t need to do that on July 1, 2, 3, 4. We’re a long way from figuring out what Andrew wants and what his agent wants, but I do know what we want. We want to keep him and we’re going to make every effort to keep both those guys.”

Myers is right with this approach, but Warriors fans probably can’t wait for them to tie the two of them down to long-term contracts. Poole emerged this season as someone who could become a star in this league for the years to come, while Andrew Wiggins shone at the biggest stage of the sport, as he was their second-best player in the NBA Finals.

The two of them are, in many ways, the future of this franchise, and the Warriors will remain in the spotlight for a very long time should they manage to keep them around for the longest possible time. The two of them celebrated about how they are going to get paid after winning this title, and it might well become reality in the coming months.
