Even with the world talking about Playboi Carti’s long-awaited ‘I AM MUSIC’ dropping, the talk of the town has once again become Luka Doncic. On the track ‘Good Credit‘, Kendrick Lamar referenced Luka Doncic‘s weight issues in a series of lines that also pointed to his recent move to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that represents Lamar’s hometown of L.A.

“The numbers is nothing, the money is nothing, I’ve really been him I promise, see Kenny been heavy out west and I carry the weight n**** I’m Luka Doncic.”

These words from Lamar are certainly interesting. Doncic was traded to the Lakers, Lamar’s favorite team, at the beginning of February. It was reported recently that one of the reasons Mavericks GM Nico Harrison chose to trade Luka was because of his habits off the court, specifically his love for drinking beer and smoking hookah.

Doncic has always struggled with his weight, with there being numerous reports at the start of almost every season that Luka arrived at training camp overweight after a summer of enjoying good food and drinks. However, so far, it has never really impacted his performances on the court.

Rob Pelinka pulled off a masterstroke during the trade negotiations, convincing Harrison that Luka’s health issues are a big reason they wouldn’t give up Dalton Knecht and more than one draft pick in the trade.

Doncic’s weight issues, combined with his seeming lack of focus when it comes to staying in shape during the offseason, played a big role in Harrison’s decision to move on from the Slovenian superstar.

And given how he has played since joining the Lakers, it’s safe to say that Harrison made the wrong call. Several fans have also poked fun at Harrison, including the Lakers fans who chanted ‘Thank You’ when their team hosted the Mavericks at the Crypto.com Arena. Even fans of the rival San Antonio Spurs booed Harrison for the decision he made.

Others within the Mavericks organization, such as Patrick Dumont, have claimed that they made the decision to trade Luka to protect the future of their franchise. It’s hard to see how landing an older, more injury-prone superstar like Anthony Davis in return for Luka is securing the future, but few can argue with that decision if it helps the Mavericks win a championship in the next few years.

As for Doncic, he has thrived on the Lakers. He and LeBron James formed a formidable duo and were dominating the rest of the league before the latter went down with a groin injury. The hope for the Lakers will be that by the time the playoffs start, both LeBron and Luka will be healthy enough to lead the Lakers to a deep run against some of the best teams in the Western Conference.
