Bradley Beal Explains Why He Ruined All-Time Anthony Edwards’ Highlight With Mid-Dunk Push

Bradley Beal explained what went through his mind before he pushed Anthony Edwards mid-air to ruin an all-time highlight dunk.

The Phoenix Suns saw their Playoff hopes be given another massive blow as they fell to a one-sided 116-98 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves last night. The biggest moment from the game came in crunch time when Donte DiVincenzo threw a bounce-pass lob to Anthony Edwards, prompting Suns guard Bradley Beal to push Edwards while he was in the air to disrupt the dunk.

Many people were mad at Beal for doing what he did as he ruined a potential all-time highlight as well as giving Edwards a major injury risk. He addressed his actions at a post-practice interview earlier today, making it clear that there’s no animosity between him and Edwards.

“It’s scoring at the end of the game when you don’t have to. They could’ve just scored the ball, but we’re not about to turn us into a highlight reel. We’ve seen enough highlights from them tonight, so I was just making an aggressive play and just letting him know, like, we’re not doing that. And he respected it, it wasn’t… My intention was never to hurt him or anybody” in that situation. The team respected it.”

“It wasn’t too much. They were trying to say, ‘You can’t do that!’ That’s fine but you can’t be thinking that I would just let that happen either. Both sides have every right to feel and do what they do.”

Edwards had an incredible night against Phoenix, putting up 44 points (12-22 FG), five rebounds, and seven assists in the win. Beal started as the Suns’ point guard, putting up 18 points (8-15 FG), four rebounds, and three assists in the loss.

This is technically a Playoff rematch from last season, though both teams seem to be in different positions this year. The winners of the Playoff matchup were Minnesota and they’re fighting for a top-six seed in the West. The Suns have seemingly regressed since their sweep loss in last year’s first round, currently 3.5 games behind the No. 10 seed.

The Suns are a frustrated bunch, which came through in Beal’s actions against Edwards. The team can’t really do anything on-court to stop opponents, especially when they look so disconnected from each other. It’s almost impossible to rely on Phoenix to perform at a winning level right now.

They have a shot at making the Play-In Tournament as they could catch up to the injury-riddled Dallas Mavericks who lost Kyrie Irving and Jaden Hardy to the injury list tonight as well. But can a fully healthy but fully disconnected Suns squad overcome an entirely injured but feisty Mavericks roster in the standings? It’s hard to say.

For the Timberwolves, they’ll be happy they left that game with Edwards unscathed and their record at 33-29. They’re just half a game behind the No. 6 seed, so they’ll continue pushing to earn an automatic Playoff spot with Edwards leading the charge.
