Long before Shannon Sharpe was an NBA analyst who debated co-host Skip Bayless on Undisputed, he was a legendary tight end for the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens. Sharpe won 3 Superbowls during his career and is part of the NFL Hall of Fame.

Recently, Shannon Sharpe shared a story from his playing days. He claimed that in 1993 he bought a $250K car while only making $325K. He jokingly added that he was “looking like Batman” in the “Atlanta streets.”

I’m well off financially, but I look back at some of the purchases I made. I didn’t lose money because of my behaviour. I look back I’m like “how big a fool was I, buying a quarter-million dollar car, making 325,000 dollars?” That probably wasn’t wise.

I bought a Ferrari 512 TR. The black one Michael Jordan had in The Last Dance. I had that exact car. That was in 1993, Skip, I was making a grand-whopping total of 325,000 dollars. That was my fourth year… It wasn’t worth it… I looked like Batman.

There’s no question that well-off athletes often make extravagant purchases, and this seems like one of those scenarios. Obviously, using most of one’s yearly salary on one purchase isn’t the best way to spend money, no matter how great the car is. Shannon Sharpe even admits that “it wasn’t worth it”. With that being said, owning a Ferrari which is of the exact same model/make as Michael Jordan’s is pretty cool, and it’s easy to see why Shannon Sharpe would elect to make that purchase.

Shannon Sharpe is more than equipped to make big purchases now, as it was reported that he earns $3 million annually by Front Office Sports. It is however funny to hear about his purchases in his youth, and hopefully, he avoids spending the majority of his salary on one thing in the future.
