The NBA is the biggest basketball league in the world. Keeping that in mind, fans expect the league to be officiated with utmost perfection. While the referees try to keep the level of officiating to the highest level, over the last few seasons, many have seen a dip in it.
In the 2022-23 NBA season, the refs have missed out on several crucial foul calls against the Los Angeles Lakers. That even led to fans believing that the referees are unfairly targeting the Purple and Gold this season.
With that being said, there has been a common narrative around the league that referees should be fined for their mistakes. But is that really the best solution?
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Addresses Fans Wanting The Referees To Get Fined For Mistakes
NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently talked about one of the hottest topics around the league. Yes, the topic is about whether the referees should be fined for their mistakes or not. After all, these mistakes can have season-altering results for many teams.
Via ESPN:
“We don’t publicize discipline for officials. We don’t think that will be appropriate. But their assignments are affected by the quality of their calls, whether or not they progress into the playoffs and then round by round is impacted by the accuracy of their calls and their demeanor on the floor. So there is a system for overseeing and making those judgements about officials. But more to your earlier point about getting the calls right, that’s again not a new issue.”
The NBA’s method for disciplining the referees isn’t too harsh. But should it be? After all, the refs have continuously made a lot of mistakes this season. Last month, an NBA fan explained the downsides of potentially fining referees for making incorrect calls.
Adam Silver seems to agree with that theory and has put in a somewhat lenient disciplinary system for the officials. The league may alter the system down the line if they find a need to do so.
