Brittney Griner has been through a tumultuous 2022, and it showed when she shed light on the possibility of playing overseas very clear.

“I’m never going overseas to play again unless I’m representing my country at the Olympics. If I make that team, that will be the only time I would leave U.S. soil and that’s just to represent the USA,” Griner said during a recent news conference.

This was the Phoenix Mercury star’s first conference after she was released from Russia in December last year, and the session was mixed with jokes and copious doses of emotion.

Ahead of the WNBA season, the center said she was looking forward to playing after nearly 10 months. And in what comes as a wholesome reply and also an inkling of her motivation, Griner said:

“I’m no stranger to hard times… This was a pretty big one, but I relied on my hard work and getting through it,” Griner said. “I know this sounds so small, but dying in practice, those hard workouts, you find a way to grind it out and put your head down and keep going and keep moving forward. That was my thing, just never be still and get to focus on the now and look forward to what’s to come.”

But the events last year are something that Griner will never forget, and she made it abundantly clear that she will only play internationally in the Olympics.

Brittney Griner And Phoenix Suns Star Kevin Durant Sharing A Hug Went Viral Earlier This Year

Kevin Durant shared a wholesome moment with Griner ahead of his Phoenix Suns debut earlier this year. The seasoned veteran linked up with the center, who was getting in some practice ahead of the WNBA edition.

Since her return, Griner inked a one-year, $165,000 deal with the Mercury. Her return was one of the bigger headlines in the NBA circuit. Earlier, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was one of the players who expressed his happiness in having Griner home.

We are glad she’s home, we’re glad she’s reunited with her family,” Curry said during the SI Sportsperson of the Year Awards. “It’s a constant reminder for everybody continuing to use their platforms to speak on issues that are meaningful and can move the needle. Thank you to President Biden’s administration for being a part of that fight.

It remains to be seen how the Mercury and the Griner will fare this WNBA season.
