In a hilarious segment on the ‘7 PM in Brooklyn’ podcast, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony told the story of the first time he met Stevie Wonder. Wonder, who was born blind, talked about how much he loved “watching” Melo play and he went on to admit that it was hard for him to keep it together.

“All-Star weekend LA, we’re in the back locker room, and the hallway flooded,” said Anthony. “They like ‘Yo Stevie Wonder wanna meet the players.’ He comes out and meets the players. Goes to [Camelo Anthony] and he says ‘I love watching you play.’ We were crying before the game!”

Carmelo Anthony, 40, is a 10x NBA All-Star and future basketball Hall of Famer. In 1,260 games, he averaged 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on 44.7% shooting. The former scoring champion never usually has trouble keeping his cool but even he struggled not to lose it during his first encounter with Stevie Wonder.

The 2011 All-Star game was out in Los Angeles, and Wonder was one of several celebrity appearances at the event. Wonder, 74, is a legendary singer, songwriter, and record producer who is one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians of the 20th century. Wonder became blind shortly after birth due to a condition called retinopathy of prematurity. But despite his early setbacks, Wonder excelled at music from a young age, learning the drums by the age of three and Harmonica by the age of six.

Wonder went on to become one of the best musicians in the world, and he grew his empire to become an iconic producer. He never let a lack of vision keep him down and Carmelo has a lot of respect for that just like countless others who have crossed his path.

Whether it was a mix-up or some kind of prank, nobody can be sure why Stevie Wonder said he loved to “watch” Carmelo Anthony play basketball but the most he’s ever done is listen to his games through a live broadcast. He’s lost his sight since before Carmelo even picked up a ball and has never actually got to see anyone play the sport for himself.

Nevertheless, the whole situation was so ridiculous that Carmelo and his teammate couldn’t help but burst out laughing on the spot. Anthony was in disbelief over what he heard and, even now, the quote sticks out to him as one of the most memorable encounters he’s ever had with an A-list celebrity.

So far, no comments have been made by Wonder or anyone officially associated with him, but he clearly left a strong impression on one of the league’s biggest stars. Maybe one day, he’ll go public to share his side of the story.

For now, however, his silly mistake is going to be a source of entertainment for Carmelo and his friend for years to come and there’s even more to the tale that we may or may not hear depending on who Anthony can get to corroborate the claims.
