Charles Barkley Says ESPN Is Exploiting Bronny Jr. By Showing His Games On National Television

2 Min Read

The lack of pay for collegiate players has become one of the hottest topics in the sports world today. The networks, schools, and NCAA are all raking in millions of dollars for the production and play of these young athletes — all while the athletes themselves are prohibited from taking a share.

Should these college athletes get paid? Most find the answer obvious.

But what about high school? 15-year-old LeBron James Jr. is already a basketball star, and some of his games are being displayed by several big networks, including ESPN. According to league analyst and former player Charles Barkley, it’s an exploitive act that should not be happening.

“This is the ultimate exploitation. What is the financial incentive other than the network making money on these high school kids? …You’re making money on college kids now you’re making money on high school kids.”

Bronny Jr. is obviously attracting large audiences, so much so that his High School games are being displayed on live TV. Indeed, networks are profiting from the kid and not really offering much in return.

Of course, one could say that it’s just the nature of the sports world. But people will just have to agree to disagree on this one.
