  • Damian Lillard thinks that the 2020 championship was hard to win for the Lakers
  • The superstar noted that everyone was fresh and rested
  • Many have questioned the validity of the 2020 championship because it was played in a “bubble”

The Los Angeles Lakers last won the championship in 2020, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way for the squad. Though the team clearly won the championship in a fair manner even with the NBA bubble, there are many who discredit their win due to it not being in usual playoff conditions.

Recently, Damian Lillard defended the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 championship win. He claimed that it was “hard to win” the 2020 championship, noting that everyone was fresh and at their best.

“I don’t understand what people mean when they’re talking about getting credit… I feel it would have been hard to win that. People was fresh bruh… I feel like based off of how my body felt, and what I knew our experience was, we would never see a more fresh version of the opposition then we did at that time.”

It is true that there was a break midseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and every single team got to rest and come in at peak performance. It is easy to see why Damian Lillard believes that this was a difficult championship, and there’s a lot of truth to what he’s saying.

A Lot Of People Enjoyed The Basketball That Was Played In The NBA Bubble

Though there clearly are groups of people who did not like the NBA bubble due to the lack of a fan audience, there are a lot of people who appreciated the basketball that was played in the NBA bubble. Everyone was locked in, in an environment where basketball was the primary focus. Though it wasn’t necessarily a regular stadium, it is fair to say that everyone was on the same playing field. Lamar Odom previously stated that he loves the NBA bubble, as it came with no distractions and was “just straight-up hoops”.

“The bubble came with no distractions, no shenanigans… just straight-up hoops”

There is no doubt that the bubble championship has continued to be a controversial topic among fans and analysts alike. People have fiery debates about whether that championship should come with an “asterisk”. With that being said, a lot of these debates won’t matter many years from now. What will matter is the Lakers winning the 2020 championship, and winning remains forever.

The Los Angeles Lakers Should Be Contenders Once Again Next Season

Though the Los Angeles Lakers have not won a championship since 2020, they should absolutely be a contending team next season. They retained a lot of key free agents and added some new faces such as Christian Wood and Gabe Vincent. They have two superstars and elite depth, which is obviously a recipe to win the championship.

The one concern that the Lakers should rightfully have is about the durability of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Both stars are getting older, and both played less than 60 games last season. However, as long as the Los Angeles Lakers end up making the playoffs, and James and Davis are healthy, they will have a chance against any team in the league.
