Daryl Morey’s bold trade inquiries during the NBA trade deadline included a notable attempt to gauge the availability of LeBron James from the Los Angeles Lakers, according to sources.

Following a cryptic social media post from James, Morey, the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations, reached out to Lakers GM Rob Pelinka to explore the possibility of a trade involving the four-time NBA champion.

“Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey called Pelinka to probe on a James trade and was immediately told that James wasn’t available. In fact, Pelinka responded by asking Morey if Joel Embiid was available, sources said. And that ended that brief conversation.”

In response to Morey’s inquiry about James, Pelinka astutely redirected the conversation by asking if Joel Embiid, the 76ers’ star center, was available, as reported by ESPN Insider Ramona Shelbourne. This strategic move effectively put an end to any further discussion about a potential James trade, as it implied that the Lakers were not entertaining offers for their franchise cornerstone.

Pelinka’s response demonstrated both his shrewdness as a negotiator and the Lakers’ firm stance on retaining James. By turning the tables and inquiring about Embiid, Pelinka subtly conveyed that the Lakers valued James as highly as the 76ers valued Embiid, if not more so.

All these trade talks started after a few actions by LeBron James which hinted that he may be available for a trade, which had never happened during his 21-year career.

During the lead-up to the NBA trade deadline, LeBron James sparked speculation with a cryptic tweet posted at midnight, hinting at potential unrest or dissatisfaction. Furthermore, James raised eyebrows when he conspicuously displayed a Knicks towel in a post-game interview, prompting speculation about his future intentions or frustrations within the Lakers organization.

Adding to the intrigue, James repeated the same answer twice inquiries about potential trades on two separate occasions, fueling speculation about his mindset and future plans. Reports also circulated suggesting that James was growing frustrated with the Lakers’ lack of activity leading up to the trade deadline, indicating potential discontent or concerns about the team’s roster composition.

Daryl Morey’s trade inquiries during the NBA trade deadline were not limited to LeBron James; he also explored the availability of other star players, including those from the Phoenix Suns.

“These sorts of bold trade calls are historically a common practice for Morey, who also called the Phoenix Suns and asked about a trade for Kevin Durant prior to the deadline, sources said. When told no, Morey then asked about the availability of Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, too.”

In addition to inquiring about James, Morey expressed interest in the Suns’ trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, sources revealed.

Ultimately, the exchange between Morey and Pelinka underscored the Lakers’ unwavering commitment to their superstar player and their reluctance to entertain trade offers for James.

Despite the speculative nature of trade discussions during the deadline period, Pelinka’s decisive response effectively shut down any possibility of James being moved, reaffirming the Lakers’ belief in their championship aspirations with James leading the way.

What Would Be A Trade Scenario For The Sixers To Land LeBron James?

In a hypothetical trade scenario where the Philadelphia 76ers aim to acquire LeBron James from the Los Angeles Lakers, one potential package could involve including promising young guard Tyrese Maxey along with 3 draft picks.

The draft picks included in the trade package could include Philadelphia’s own future first-round picks, possibly spanning several years, as well as any additional picks acquired through previous trades or draft assets.

However, such a trade would likely be considered a long shot due to the considerable value James brings to the Lakers and the complexities involved in matching salaries and assets.

Conversely, for the Lakers to secure Joel Embiid from the Philadelphia 76ers, it would require a monumental offer. One speculative trade proposal could involve offering Anthony Davis along with a future first-round pick, potentially from the 2029 draft, and possibly including young talent like Austin Reaves to sweeten the deal.

Nevertheless, acquiring Embiid, the reigning MVP and arguably the best player in the world, would be an immense challenge for any team. Despite facing injury challenges during the current season, Embiid has maintained staggering statistical averages, including 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. His impressive shooting percentages of 53.3% from the field and 36.6% from beyond the arc further underscore his dominance on the court.

Ultimately, both trade scenarios present significant hurdles and are unlikely to materialize given the complexities of NBA trades, the value of the players involved, and the strategic priorities of each respective franchise. However, the mere speculation surrounding such blockbuster trades underscores the intrigue and excitement that permeates the NBA landscape.
