After helping Germany win the gold in this year’s FIBA World Cup tournament, former Lakers guard Dennis Schroder chimed in on one of the summer’s hottest debates. Speaking to Malika Andrews for a quick snippet on ESPN, Schroder respectfully explained why Team Germany, not the Denver Nuggets, deserve to be called champions of the world.

“World Cup is every country representing, every country has a chance to win. Denver Nuggets are a great ball club and they beat us in the Western Conference Finals. Respect to them but I mean the World Cup is the real place where everybody comes to represent their countries and we take that one for sure,” Schroder said.

It’s a yearly tradition for the NBA to crown their Finals winner as the “World Champions” and usually, nobody thinks twice about it. This year, however, the conversation changed when American athlete Noah Lyles argued that winning the NBA championship does not make you the world’s champs. “I love the U.S… but that ain’t the world,” said Lyles in a media interview.

Of course, it didn’t take long for fans and even some players to fight back on that claim and it sparked hours of debate all over social media. “The NBA is the best league in the world that’s why the champs are world champs,” explained Tyler Herro.

Who Are The “World Champions” In 2023?

While the Denver Nuggets may consider themselves as the world champions, the title really belongs to Germany, who won the FIBA World Cup in 2023 after beating Serbia. It’s the first-ever tournament win for the country, and they are relishing in the victory.

This year, the USA came back completely empty-handed with a fourth-place finish in the tournament. Despite sky-high expectations from the jump, Team USA was very beatable this year and their lack of size, shooting, and playmaking proved to be their undoing when it counted the most.

So, when you talk about basketball around the world, the US isn’t as far ahead as they used to be and the NBA may be losing some ground around the world as other nations continue to get better and better at the sport. Until proven otherwise, you have to recognize Germany as champions of the world — but it may not stay that way for very long.

Team USA Is Plotting Its Revenge

People across the world were happy to troll Team USA after their embarrassing World Cup showing, but it’ll be interesting to see how the discourse changes for the Paris Olympics in 2024. With expected commitments from LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant (among others), Germany is not going to have an easy time defending their title.

And if the USA is able to bring the Gold medal back home, you can bet that they will be calling themselves the “world champions” at any opportunity they have. For now, however, Team USA can do nothing but wait and watch as Germany proudly displays their “best in the world” title for all to see.
