In a conversation with Celtics legend Paul Pierce, Draymond Green explained why he will not be trying for a farewell tour in his his final NBA season. According to the 4x champion, any attempt at a farewell tour will trigger a massive response from the fans, who will be ready to give him a taste of his own medicine.
“I can’t because somebody is gonna do me like I said to you, and then I’m f*cked,” said Green, as Pierce laughed in the background.
The only exception to Draymond’s retirement plans would be if his final year happens to “coincide” with that of his championship teammates.
“That’s that only chance it will get announced because then I could ride Steph’s coattails on his farewell tour and act like it’s mine,” joked Draymond.
Of course, Draymond knows all too well why fans are so eager for him to announce his retirement ahead of time. Years ago, when Paul Pierce was in his last year, Draymond went viral for his savage trash talk, which included telling Pierce that his legacy paled in comparison to Kobe Bryant’s.
Now, with Draymond nearing the end, you can bet there will be fans ready to say the same things about him — and Pierce is among them since he promised his revenge straight to his face. After years of bullying everyone and trash-talking his way to the spotlight, it’s only fair that his competitors treat him the same, now that he’s in a vulnerable position.
Even so, while Draymond may not get a retirement tour for himself, it’s likely the Warriors will have a sendoff season together sometime in the near future, which will mark the end of an era for everyone involved.
Is This The End For The Warriors Dynasty?
After Kevin Durant left in 2019, and Klay’s season-ending injury, it was clear that the peak glory days were over for the Warriors. After years of irrelevant seasons, they finally pulled off the impossible again in 2022, when they won their fourth NBA championship.
Things quickly fell apart that summer, and what followed has been a chaotic mess both on and off the court. Starting with the veteran core, both Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have struggled in their own way and neither have stepped up to be the co-star that Curry needs.
There’s also the situation with Andrew Wiggins. He’s been up-and-down all year and his stats are pretty abysmal across the board. This week, it was announced he’d miss time again indefinitely for “private” and “personal” reasons with no word on when he’ll get back.
Recently, while the Warriors have looked a lot better since the All-Star break, there is a sense that they still need more to become the truly competitive team they used to be. This season at 9th in the West, the Warriors still have a long way to go before they can start feeling good about their position but as long as there’s time left, and the big three are healthy, nobody can count this team out for good.
