According to Warriors coach Steve Kerr, Andrew Wiggins is expected to miss some time this season due to undisclosed “personal reasons.” Speaking on 95.7 The Game, he shed some more light on the situation and admitted to the public that nobody knows when Wiggins will return.
“Wiggs is a private person and he’s asked to keep it private and we’re going to honor that,” said Kerr. “It doesn’t help for me to sit here and try to explain any of that. The bottom line is, we respect Wiggs, we need him, and we fully expect him back but we just don’t know when that will be.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time that Wiggins has had to step away in the middle of the season. Last year, Wiggins missed nearly a month of action for reasons that have still not been revealed. At the time, all anyone knew was that the situation was “serious” and that there was no timetable for a return. Andrew came back to close the season for the Warriors, but he was never the same again.
This season, through 51 games, Wiggs is averaging just 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game on 45.5% shooting. Compared to each of his previous campaigns with the Warriors, those numbers are shockingly low and it’s been the story for Andrew all season long. Now, just when the Warriors need him the most, he is out once again with absolutely no indication of when he might be back.
It’s another unfortunate turn of events for Golden State this season and another reason to doubt whether they can make some noise in the West this year.
A Season From Hell For The Golden State Warriors
After trading for Chris Paul this past summer, the Warriors were hoping to rekindle the sparks of their glory days. Instead, it’s been one disaster after another as their very future hangs in the balance.
Draymond Green has arguably been the biggest source of grief for this group, as his antics on the court this season led to an indefinite suspension that he’s still trying to make up for. His behavior lately has been borderline unhinged and he hasn’t shown any signs of remorse for his actions.
There’s also the struggles of Klay Thompson, who has been a shell of himself all season long. Whether due to age, injuries or just bad luck, Thompson’s shot hasn’t been falling like we’re used to and his defense hasn’t had the same impact as before.
Mix in those concerns with injuries to Chris Paul and a public battle between Jonathan Kuminga and Steve Kerr, and it becomes clear why the Warriors have had such a tough time this season. But can they overcome these obstacles?
Behind the greatness of Stephen Cury, anything is possible on the court but to match up against the best of the West, the Warriors (at the very least) will need to be whole. For now, it remains to be seen how things will play out with Wiggs but it’s not a good sign that he’s taking off again, and interestingly at nearly the same time he did a year ago. If fans don’t get some answers on this fast, people will start to ask some serious questions about just what is going on in San Francisco.
