• Enes Kanter has made a controversial statement yet again

• The former NBA center claims he should identify as a woman and go dominate the WNBA

• Kanter hasn’t played for an NBA team since being waived by the Celtics in the 2021-22 season

Enes ‘Freedom’ Kanter has been making headlines for the last few years. Not for being a basketball player but because of his regularly controversial comments about world affairs.

Kanter has made another controversial statement by saying he should identify as a woman to get a chance in the WNBA after being black-balled by the NBA.

“Men don’t belong in women’s spaces. Restrooms – Locker Rooms or Sports. Since I’m blackballed from the NBA, should I put on a wig, identify as a woman and start dominating the WNBA? Is that when the outrage will begin? Is that fair to all the women who spent their whole life chasing their goals? Where are all the Women Rights Activists and Feminists?!”

Kanter was a 10-year NBA veteran and has made several politically sensitive comments since 2020. This includes open shots at Adam SilverLeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Nike.

Delegitimizing the talents of the WNBA and the stigmatized process of gender transition for a shock value statement is another example of Kanter’s relative insensitivity to ideals he doesn’t agree with.

Is Enes Kanter Black-Balled From The NBA Or Not Good Enough?

Kanter has been claiming a league-wide conspiracy is keeping him off a roster, while the truth may be different from what he’s saying. The center was a great rotational player for most of his career, capable of providing an offensive spark on the court. He was arguably among the best offensive rebounders of the time, averaging 3.0 offensive rebounds per game in his career.

Despite those objective positives in Kanter’s game, he simply doesn’t provide the functions most modern NBA centers need. Either you’re a small and mobile center that can switch positions and stretch the floor, or you’re a traditional shot-blocker and rim-runner. Kanter is neither, being one of the worst defensive big men in the league during his time. He averaged 11.2 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Could some team in the NBA find a use for Kanter? Probably, given his size and skill set. But does anything he provides make a big enough difference for a team to bring him back into the NBA? We think not. If Meyers Leonard could get another chance, it’s clear NBA teams will go wherever talent takes them. Unfortunately, they aren’t going to Kanter anytime soon.
