Former NBA All-Star Deron Williams stepped away from basketball and pursued his passion for martial arts, even competing in a boxing bout against former NFL running back Frank Gore. The ex-NBA point guard spoke on the PlayersTV Podcast and offered feuding NBA players a secret ‘Summer Fight Club’ to settle any beef in the offseason.
“These people that got these beef, that got these ongoing feuds. Just come to my gym, put the gloves on in summertime, and we’ll settle it. If you got beef, come to the Fight Club, we’ll call it ‘Summer Fight Club.’ They got to tell nobody. Just hit me. It’s not gonna be broadcast. We turn the cameras off. They just handle their business. Because they talk about it but they’re really not about it.”
This is such an insane offer but it might also be genius. There’s no way something like this can be actualized in reality, as many NBA contracts would have clauses forbidding such activity given the injury risk it carries, even in the offseason. But it’d be hilarious to imagine two players hitting Williams up to set up a private fight where they can air their frustrations out in an actual fight.
Given what we’ve seen in recent NBA seasons with players such as Draymond Green getting into two fights in the span of months, Williams knows he’s offering something of value to many of these warring NBA players. Unfortunately, the league and its teams will not let something like this exist, no matter how ‘secret’ it is.
Draymond Green Will Be In Trouble If He Has Another Violent Season
Draymond Green has been singled out as the face of modern NBA aggression, getting into multiple fights last season and chasing away a young and emerging star like Jordan Poole from the Warriors by knocking him out with a punch in preseason. His anger reared its ugly head in the 2023 Playoffs, with Green getting suspended for intentionally stomping on Domantas Sabonis’ chest.
He followed this up with two fights last season, trying to choke Rudy Gobert unconscious and intentionally throwing a full-force punch on Jusuf Nurkic. All these events taking place in a 15-month span led to a lot of genuine concern for Green with players hoping he gets the help he needs.
Draymond will have no choice but to keep a lid on his temper and behavior on the court this season given how much of a distraction it’s been for the Warriors in recent seasons. It’s not a good look when everyone looks at Green and instantly jokes about him being a great fit in the WWE.
Basketball is a sport of skill and Green’s antics have made it hard to enjoy watching the Warriors as much in the last two seasons. Even though Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr express major disappointment in Green’s actions, it seems Draymond no longer has a choice about how he behaves on the court.
