- Terrence Williams stole approximately $5 million from NBA’s Healthcare plan
- Williams is sentenced to 10 years in prison
- The former Nets player committed the crime from 2017 to 2021 with the help of a dentist
Terrence Williams was picked as the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. Williams recently made headlines for committing fraud of approximately $5 million.
Williams stole the amount from the NBA’s Healthcare and Welfare plan. The 36-year-old is sentenced to 10 years in prison.
“Williams led a wide-ranging scheme to steal millions of dollars from the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said. “Williams recruited medical professionals and others to expand his criminal conspiracy and maximize his ill-gotten gains.
“Williams not only lined his pockets through fraud and deceit, but he also stole the identities of others and threatened a witness to further his criminal endeavors. For his brazen criminal acts, Williams now faces years in prison.”
Terrence Williams was the mastermind of the plan, which included 18 other NBA players. He pleaded guilty to the crime back in August 2022.
“In addition to his prison term, Williams, 36, of Seattle, Washington, was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to forfeit $653,672.55 and to pay restitution in the amount of $2,500,000.”
Williams used to recruit former NBA players and other non-medical professionals into his scheme in exchange for at least $300,000.
