Ime Udoka is set to start a new chapter in his novel coaching career after the Houston Rockets landed him as their new head coach following Stephen Silas’ exit.
Udoka, who is one of the most sought-after yet controversial candidates out there, landed the job, and during his first press conference got to know one of his players for the next season.
The former Boston Celtics head coach reacted to Kevin Porter Jr. being the only player to attend his press conference.
“I see I got a smart player here,” he said. “He’s trying to get some playing time already — only guy that showed up.”
Udoka is already trying to send a message to his young team, making it clear that he expects the best from them and won’t take less than that.
“I’m just trying to expedite the process of becoming professionals,” he said. “To the players, one of my first messages would be youth is not an excuse.”

He had the chance to coach two young stars in Boston, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. However, the Rockets are younger than his prior team. This could be a bigger challenge to the soon-to-be second-year coach.
Stephen Silas reportedly had big issues connecting with his players, and Ime could have that same fate. However, it seems like Porter Jr., one of the most criticized players last season, is already showing his support to the new head coach.
The offseason is long for a team like the Rockets and more players will surely swing by to greet their new head coach, who will have a big challenge next season.

Udoka also touched on his tumultuous exit from the Boston Celtics, revealing that the Houston Rockets due their diligence to know all the details of it while also confirming that he’s a serious person and won’t relapse into bad behaviors.
This can be a great addition or a terrible move for the Houston Rockets, but as of right now, it looks promising for them. It’s time for this core to start showing some results and with a coach like Udoka, that’s very likely to happen.
