In a scandal long since forgotten, Ime Udoka was suspended from the Celtics organization after leaks of an inappropriate relationship with one of his staffers.
While Udoka was never publicly released from his duties, the Cs have moved on to hand the role to Joe Mazzulla, and Udoka remains jobless as the playoffs approach.
But according to a new report Steve Bulpett, the former Celtics coach, could draw serious interest from the Raptors or Rockets this offseason.
“Amid reports that Nick Nurse and Toronto may be looking to separate following this season, one league executive stated that Udoka, suspended for the season by the Celtics for ‘violations of team policies,’ would be of interest to the Raptors,” wrote Bulpett. “There is word the Rockets would have interest in Nurse if he is available and they choose to part ways with Stephen Silas. In the latter case, Houston would also look into Udoka.”
After his situation went viral, Udoka was condemned by the Celtics and sent into exile from the NBA. Besides a few statements after the initial reveal, there hasn’t been much noise coming from Udoka and his camp.
Fortunately for him, a number of coaching spots could open up this season, and it seems (with Quin Snyder off the board) he’d be a major consideration for all of them.
Does Ime Deserve A Second Chance?
There is no doubt that Udoka betrayed the trust of the Celtics organization, and they had every right to respond the way that they did.
But there are some questions about if Udoka deserved to get fired from his old job at all.
“They put him on front street. With his personal business, and I happen to know many occasions where that never happened to people who look a lot different than me or you,” said Stephen A. Smith. “This is where I make people uncomfortable, and I don’t give two damns about it. Y’all full of it, and it really ticks me off with that. What we can do is point out the inconsistency. When you talk about Black folks and what we’re really aspiring for, what you’re talking about fair and equal treatment.”
Whatever went into the Cs choice to say goodbye to Udoka, it’s already over now, and there’s no going back to change the decision.
But one thing that can never be erased away is all that Ime accomplished in his one-year Boston stint, and there is a widespread belief that his role in that will land him another opportunity before it’s all said and done.
