Jerry West has been in and around the NBA for over 60 years at this point and currently finds himself as a consultant for the Los Angeles Clippers.
He recently made an appearance on Paul George’s podcast where he spoke on a host of topics which included his favorite non-Clippers player to watch and it turns out it’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“Something about Giannis that attracts me to him,” West said on Podcast P. “I try to look at somebody if you’re really good, who would you like to play with? Is he gonna make you better? I don’t know if he’s gonna make you better. I don’t. But the thing that he does — if you watch their team, they follow him… He has some extra juice inside of him.”
(starts at 1:37:44 mark):
Giannis really is something special and there just hasn’t been anyone like him in NBA history. His teammates certainly do follow his lead and he has led them to a championship. It looked like they could win it all this year too, as Giannis had a fabulous regular season in which he put up 31.1 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 5.7 APG, 0.8 SPG, and 0.8 BPG.
Unfortunately for Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks, he injured his back in Game 1 of their first-round series against the Miami Heat and was a shell of himself when he got back.
In his three playoff games, Antetokounmpo only averaged 23.3 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 5.3 APG, 0.3 SPG, and 0.7 BPG as the Bucks were eliminated in five games. Had he been fully healthy, that series could have turned out quite differently.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Will Have His Eyes Set On A Bounce Back Campaign
Entering these playoffs, Giannis was widely viewed as the best player in the world, but that’s no longer the case now. That title has been snatched from him by Nikola Jokic after he won the championship following a dominant postseason run.
Antetokounmpo will be keen to show the basketball world that he is still the top dog in the NBA and the way to do that, would be to capture his second championship next season. The Bucks have a new head coach in Adrian Griffin whom Giannis reportedly endorsed and he seems to believe that together, they can get the Bucks back to the top.
