The NBA Summer League is not a tournament that plays host to the biggest names in the sport. It is, however, starting to gain quite a bit of interest from fans in recent times. With new draft picks and a bunch of undrafted players fighting to make a name for themselves and get a contract in the NBA, the Summer League is now even televised.

This wasn’t always the case, though, for the longest time, it was a competition that didn’t get any attention whatsoever. The players playing in it were mostly only watched by interested teams, and barely 1 or 2 would get to be in the NBA once the regular season began.

With that considered, the game’s old heads that were around in the 80s and the 90s have a unique take on the competition. And speaking in a recent interview with DJ Vlad, John Salley, who played for the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls, had a unique perspective about the only good thing about the Summer League back then.

“The only thing you got at the league, the Summer League, which was the best when it was in Los Angeles… right there in Marina Del Rey. The girls came. They was free. And they were abundant. Beautiful women that you could be like, you know, you could do that with. That was all the life you were going to get. There wasn’t even news channels there.”

NBA players today are attractive to young women, considering the money that they make and the celebrity they enjoy. This was the case even back in the day when they weren’t making too much money, with some wild stories about the players partying in the 80s. This take is a hilarious one, and it’s probably a good thing that the NBA has been able to promote the Summer League into becoming a fairly serious competition in the modern age.
