Kyrie Irving’s future with the Dallas Mavericks has been one of the topics discussed ever since the side crashed out of the playoffs race, and in a recent development, an NBA insider revealed that both parties reportedly had a handshake deal in place.
Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus reported that his sources had heard of a “handshake deal” between Irving and the franchise before the midseason trade.
“I hear they had a handshake deal before the trade [with the Brooklyn Nets],” one source said. “And Kyrie wouldn’t have said yes to anything less than the max.”
Pincus recently spoke on 105.3 The Fan to discuss his reporting about the happenings in Dallas. He explained that he reportedly heard about a possible “handshake deal”. The insider made clear that it’s not based on something he’s heard directly from either the team or the players’ side.
“I was at the NBA combine and spoke to a lot of different people, and so, I wouldn’t want to put out, like these are — it’s not the Mavericks. It’s not, Kyrie or his people saying there’s a deal done,” Pincus said. “There’s just the general buzz around the NBA that when they made the [midseason trade] that they pretty much had an understanding that they would keep Kyrie Irving and pay him to stay.”
It’s worth noting that a five-year deal with the Mavs would see $272.9 million in his pocket, but could earn $210 million if he signed a four-year deal with another team.
The Philadelphia 76ers Have Reportedly Thrown Their Hat In The Ring For Kyrie Irving
After being perennially linked to the Los Angeles Lakers, Irving now has a new suitor in the Philadelphia 76ers who are reportedly interested in adding the mercurial guard. The other player of interest was Damian Lillard.
“If James Harden leaves, expect the Philadelphia 76ers to attempt to trade for Damian Lillard or Kyrie Irving. Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris will be involved in both trades,” wrote Doc Louallen, a Philly sports radio host.
Earlier, LeBron James was speculated to be pushing the Lakers hard to land Irving in the Lakers fold. “LeBron James wants the Lakers to replace Russell with Irving, sources told Heavy Sports. However, Los Angeles doesn’t have the cap space to sign Irving, who is looking for a max contract,” a report from Heavy Sports said.
Irving is surely finding demand, although he’s being modest saying he’s not made up his mind. Only time will tell if he indeed gets to stay with Dallas or finds a new home.
