A Lakers fan on X (formerly Twitter) responded to recent allegations against JJ Redick, newly appointed head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, who was accused of using a racial slur 18 to 22 years ago.

“Long as he can figure out how to beat the Nuggets, I’ll call you one too.”

The fan dismissed the severity of the claim, stating that as long as Redick could lead the team to victory over the Nuggets, he didn’t care about the past allegations. In fact, the fans even said that they would join in.

The controversy began when Halleemah Nash, a woman who claimed to have interacted with Redick while working with the Duke University basketball team, accused him of using the N-word during their time there. Nash expressed her disbelief on social media that Redick, whom she accused of this offensive behavior, was named the new head coach of the Lakers.

In response, Redick and his team quickly denied these allegations, asserting that the incident Nash described never happened. They emphasized that throughout Redick’s career, there have been no such incidents or accusations against him, leading many fans to support him and give him the benefit of the doubt.

The timing of the accusation has raised some eyebrows. Nash did not bring up the incident during Redick’s playing career in the NBA or his subsequent role as a national TV analyst for ESPN and commentator for the NBA Finals. This has led to speculation about why the allegation is surfacing now, just as Redick takes on a high-profile coaching role.

For the Lakers, this situation is delicate. If the allegations were to be proven true, it would necessitate serious repercussions for Redick. However, given his previously unblemished record and the lack of corroborating incidents, many are withholding judgment.

This incident underscores the complexities and potential pitfalls of historical allegations, particularly when they surface in the context of a high-profile career move. For now, the focus for many Lakers fans remains on Redick’s ability to lead the team to success, especially in overcoming formidable opponents like the Denver Nuggets.

The Allegations Come At A Very Odd Time

The allegations against JJ Redick surfaced at a very curious time, just hours after he was announced as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. While the validity of the allegations will ultimately be determined through proper channels, the timing of their emergence is noteworthy and raises questions.

Redick played at Duke University from 2002 to 2006, where he was one of the school’s best players. During his college career, he was a two-time ACC Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American. Redick finished his college career as the all-time leading scorer in the ACC, with 2,769 points, and set the NCAA record for most career three-pointers made with 457.

Following his successful college career, Redick was selected by the Orlando Magic as the 11th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. He went on to have a 15-year NBA career, playing for teams such as the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, and New Orleans Pelicans before retiring in 2021. Over his career, Redick became known for his sharpshooting and professional demeanor on and off the court.

Even before his retirement, Redick had started his media company and launched a popular podcast, “The Old Man and the Three.” He then joined ESPN as an analyst and later became an announcer for the NBA Finals. Throughout these high-profile roles, there were no public allegations or controversies of this nature.

The timing of the accusation is particularly peculiar, considering it did not come to light during Redick’s NBA career or his time as a prominent media figure. Now, just as he steps into a significant and highly visible role as head coach of one of the NBA’s most storied franchises, the allegations have surfaced.

The sudden emergence of these claims raises questions about why they are being brought forward now, rather than at any point during Redick’s extensive and public career in basketball and media. Regardless of the outcome, the timing of these allegations has certainly added an additional layer of complexity to Redick’s new role with the Lakers.
